Worship Ministry at FBC Portland

Lifting God’s Praise, Building God’s People

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” — Colossians 3:16

Mission Statement:

The Worship Ministry of First Baptist Portland exists to glorify God by leading Bible-centric corporate worship that lifts our praise vertically to Him and builds up His people laterally through equipping, edifying, and encouraging one another in Christ.

Vision Statement

1. Engaging the Heart of the Congregation. Worship is not a performance, but a communal invitation. Ephesians 5:19 encourages uscto “sing and make melody to the Lord with your heart.” Songwriter Keith Getty reminds us, “Congregational singing is one of the greatest ... tools ... to declare God’s truth together, to strengthen His people in the faith, and to engage the next generation with the Gospel.” Our aim is heartfelt participation: when every voice engages, worship becomes a living confession that unites the body of Christ.

2. Drawing God’s People Nearer to Him. Worship centers us on God’s presence. James 4:8 promises, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” Through Scripture, prayer, and song, we lift our eyes to the Lord stirring deep affections and dependence. As John Piper emphasizes, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” Our gatherings should leave hearts enriched and souls drawn closer to the triune God.

3. Singing and Praising the Creator Because He Is Worthy. Worship is rooted in God’s worthiness, not our preferences. Psalm 145:3 proclaims, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.” A.W. Tozer wrote, “Worship is to feel in your heart and express ... a humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe.” Dr. Todd Brady’s comments on the late Dr. Paul B. Clark’s theology of worship reminds us: “God is always the Audience of our worship. It is God who looks on the heart. For this reason, he (Paul) always led us to focus on the God to Whom we sing rather than the style with which we sang.” (Baptist & Reflector)

This anchors true worship—not in aesthetics or performance—but in reverent, unified praise offered to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, deserving of our highest adoration.

Resources for Worship.

Each month, Bro. Daniel and Pastor Jacob select both a Hymn of the Month and a Song of the Month to help anchor our worship. In addition, Daniel records a Monthly Music Ministry (MMM) Update, available in a dedicated YouTube playlist for easy access.

Every week, we also post the upcoming Sunday worship set on YouTube. This gives you the opportunity to listen, learn, and worship throughout the week—so that when we gather on Sunday mornings, our voices and hearts are ready to lift God’s praise together in corporate worship.
