Throughout the book of Judges, a phrase repeats itself, “...in the absence of a king in Israel, everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” This phrase shows us that - between the book of Joshua and the books of Samuel - God’s people were characterized by their sin. Their sin leads to enslavement and oppression by their enemies. In response to their cries for help, God raises up a judge. Through the power of God, this judge delivers Israel, bringing a period of peace until the people drift back into sin and the cycle begins again. This book is truly unique in Scripture as it highlights human depravity as well as God's steadfast grace.
